17 March 2008 No Comment

The prestigious Ronnie and Rhona Lubner Soloist Competition took place in Kimberley on 29 and 30 November 2007.

The William Humphreys Art Gallery proved a splendid venue. Surrounded by the art collection of this highly respected national museum, 15 of South Africa’s top young classical musicians filled the auditorium and gallery with music of a standard seldom heard under one roof in South Africa.

The SANYO Foundation is most grateful to Hans Huyssen, Sean Kierman and Noel Stockton for taking on the difficult job of adjudication in a competition where superb standards are displayed.

The Winners
The Overall winner and Strings category winner was cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan, whose repertoire included Martinu’s ‘Variations on a Slovakian Theme’ and the First and Second Movements from the ‘Concerto in E Minor’ by Elgar.

Six other finalists competed for the overall prize:

  • Cherilee Adams, marimba – Percussion category winner
  • Matthew Lombard and Hammon Schoonwinkle, saxophone – Woodwind category winners
  • Methendwa Machi, trumpet – Brass category winner
  • Michael Duffett, violin – Strings runner-up
  • Braam van Tonder, trumpet – Brass runner-up

The accompanists were Sjoerd Alkema (Free State), Gareth Ross (Gauteng), Petra Engelbrecht (Free State), Tertia Downie (Western Cape) and Hettie Rossouw (Northern Cape).

The participants and the SANYO Foundation are highly appreciative of the accompanists’ contribution to the high standards of the competition.
