Requirements & Auditions
How old must I be?
No younger than 13 and no older than 25
What’s the minimum musical standard?
Grade 6 (UNISA, Trinity College of Music, ABRSM) – this must be verified by your music teacher on the application form and/or you must submit copies of certificates from authorised institutions.
What’s the audition and placement procedure?
Applications have closed and pre-recorded auditions have been completed for the Sasol National Youth Orchestra Course 2009.
Behind-screen auditions will be held on the first two days of the course, 24 June 2009 for Pretoria string players, and 25 June 2009 for all remaining participants.
The audition material for the behind-screen audition on 24 and 25 June 2009 has been given to all candidates. Please note: we will require that you know the full part, and we will request excerpts at the audition. Violinists please note: we will contact three potential concert masters and they will be required to do a live audition with the conductor. They will be notified on 30 May. All other violin candidates should please learn the tutti sections and not the solo part.
You will be notified of the results of the recorded auditions – whether you’ve been accepted for the Sasol National Youth Orchestra Course 2009 or not– by email, SMS or post. Please do not call the office for audition results.

Provisions have been made for those who would like to participate in both this course as well as the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival – please contact us for more details.
The Cost
The full course fee of R1 000 (which includes accommodation and all meals) or R700 (which includes lunch only – no accommodation) is to be paid by Monday 15 June 2009.
