The National Youth Orchestra: Strings session will be held in Grahamstown with the kind support of the National Arts Festival. It is open to all young string players between the ages of 18-25, and is set to be an exhilarating, jam-packed week of advanced string playing and experience. Thirty-two string players will be selected based on our national recorded auditions in April. The orchestra will be conducted by Fredrik Burstedt (Sweden) and top string tutors will be at the course.
The National Youth Orchestra:Strings will also perform with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock, for their concerts at the National Arts Festival, and will do three performances of their own in Grahamstown. This is an ideal opportunity to launch a professional career, experience what professional orchestral playing is all about, and learn about the fantastic world of string orchestras. You will be challenged with repertoire ranging from the baroque period to a pops programme. Further performances for this ensemble, including the annual Sasol National Youth Orchestra Concert, are planned for July.

Our spring National Youth Orchestra: Wind, Brass and Percussion programme from 24 September – 3 October in Cape Town

Our National Youth Orchestra: Wind, Brass and Percussion programme is from 24 September – 3 October in Cape Town. This programme will focus on wind bands and percussion ensemble playing. The National Youth Orchestra will be conducted by Ewa Strusinska (Poland) who is the Assistant Conductor of the Halle Orchestra and the Music Director of the Halle Youth Orchestra. It will be an intensive programme filled with challenges and fun for the National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Concert Orchestra. Open to all musicians aged between 13-25.

Britten-Pears Orchestra – an opportunity for Nationals participants

The Britten-Pears Orchestra (BPO) meets four times per year and gives young artists (approx. 18-29 years) the opportunity to attend a diverse and inspiring range of courses focused on professional development. Set in Aldeburgh Music’s breath-taking surroundings on the East coast of England, it combines fantastic resources and outstanding tutors from leading international orchestras. It has also helped many artists to bridge the gap between conservatoire and professional life and launched numerous successful careers.

SA NYO members wishing to be considered for the BPO are welcome to do their SA NYO and their BPO recordings with the traveling recorded auditions in April 2010. Selected applicants will be asked to submit orchestral extracts and successful candidates will be awarded full bursaries which cover flights, meals, accommodation and course fees. In order to be considered for this fantastic opportunity please email 2010@sanyo.org.za with “BPO” in the subject heading and we will send you more information.

‘The BPO is an amazing opportunity to work with musicians from all over the world in a unique and refreshing environment…it is an opportunity young musicians should not miss out on.’
