Applications: Please apply by Friday 20 March.
Conductor: Stefan Solyom from Sweden will conduct the SA NYO
Auditions: 1st round recorded, 2nd round live behind screen.
Cost: Only R1000 (full) or R700 (course and lunch)
Repertoire: Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture, Weber Clarinet Concerto no. 2, Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade and a South African work.

When the last bars of the encore, the Polonaise from Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, came to an end, so did this year’s Sasol National Youth Orchestra course in Johannesburg. Even while the adrenalin was flowing through the bodies of 120 young musicians, their conductors and coaches and the organizers, the sadness that accompanies the conclusion of a satisfying project affected everyone.

Five years ago, the Ronnie and Rhona Lubner Music Awards were introduced, thanks to the music-loving Lubner’s son Derek, into the Sasol South African National Youth Orchestra course.
Four years ago, the Ronnie and Rhona Lubner Music Awards were introduced, thanks to the music-loving Lubner’s son Derek, into the Sasol South African National Youth Orchestra course. Open only to participants in the course, 22 young musicians elected to take part. They arrived early on the Lindner campus to concentrate on winning this prestigious prize. The prize itself? The chance to appear as soloist with the Sasol National Youth Symphony Orchestra the following year, and rich cash awards which are critical to youngsters needing expert tuition and outstanding instruments.
