The Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO) of the Bern Conservatory, a leading youth orchestra from Switzerland, is coming to South Africa to perform with members of the South African National Youth Orchestra in a unique musical exchange programme.

NewMusicSA and the South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation (SANYOF) invite South African composers to submit works to be considered for performance at the 2010 South African National Youth Orchestra course between 5-15 December 2010 in Durban. In 2009, our collaboration led to readings and performances of five South African works.
Works for symphony orchestra (3.3.3.3/4.3.3.1/4 perc/10.10.8.6.5) performable by young players of Grade 6 standard and above are welcome. Scores with single harp in addition to this will be considered.

Results for the NYO Winds, Brass and Percussion Course, taking place in Cape Town, 24 September – 3 October 2010
Please note: names are listed in random order, and this is therefore no indication of placement in an ensemble. Auditions will be done on the first day of the course (24 September) to determine placement. Official acceptance letters will be sent to each participant with information on the course, in the beginning of September.

Nearly half a century of commitment to young musicians has made the South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation the leader of the youth orchestral movement in the country, inspiring musicians with a commitment to pursue the highest standards of musical performance. 2010 boasts a series of courses in addition to the annual Sasol National Youth Orchestra Course.
The National Youth Orchestra: Strings ensemble is selected from the créme de la créme of South Africa’s young string players between the ages of 18 and 25. In July 2010 the young musicians travelled across the country to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, where they formed an all-new and exciting group.
