National Youth Orchestras Concerts
The South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation offered a very full concert programme in 2009. All of the orchestras, the National Youth Orchestra, the National Concert Orchestra, the National Wind Orchestra and the National String Orchestra, performed in Pretoria and Johannesburg on 2 and 3 July 2009. In addition to the annual July concert programme, the South African National Youth Orchestra performed in Stellenbosch in December. More details on all programmes are listed below.
The NYO performed at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch on 9 December 2009 at 20:00.
The programme included South African works by Mokale Koapeng, Peter Klatzow and Robert Fokkens and the Russian masterpiece by Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade. It was conducted with flair by Fredrik Burstedt. Thank you to the Konservatorium at Stellenbosch University for making this concert possible, to the Andrag family for generously hosting Mr. Burstedt and to Annemie Apffelstaedt for your kind help around the course.
The National Youth Orchestra conducted by Stefan Solyom, performed the Weber Clarinet Concerto No.2 with Junnan Sun, winner of last year’s Ronnie and Rhona Lubner Competition, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. The concert was opened by the National Youth String Orchestra with Samson Diamond (violin) and Innocentia Diamond (cello) as soloists at the Linder Auditorium, 2 July 2009.
The National Youth Concert Orchestra performed the Poulenc Double Piano Concerto with acclaimed piano duo, Laura Pauna and Cara Hesse, on 2 July 2009 at the Linder Auditorium, Johannesburg.
The National Youth Wind Orchestra performed under the baton of Laszlo Marosi and the National Youth String Orchestra performed with Tinus Botha (piano). A most exciting performance was the massed youth orchestra, made up of all of the South African National Youth Orchestras. They blew everyone away with Abba and Queen at the Aula, University of Pretoria, on 3 July 2009.
